For this “On The Job” series, we feature the famous Kentland Volunteer Fire Department, Prince George's Co., Maryland, in which their station 33 is arguably the busiest volunteer engine and truck company in the nation with over 6800 apparatus responses last year and quite possibly the busiest 100 percent volunteer fire department in the world with a combined response total of almost 9000 per year! Kentland Volunteer Fire Department was founded in 1951 to protect the rural areas surrounding Washington D.C and presently consists of two stations, company 33 and 46 located just outside the District of Colombia just 5 miles from the capitol of Prince George. The response area includes FedEx Field, home of the Washington Redskins, the US Air Arena, former home to the Capitals (NHL) and Bullets (Now the Wizards, NBA) and Six Flags Amusement Park. Major roadways such as the Capital Beltway (I-495) and MD Route 50 bring commuters to and from an area of industrial complexes, garden style apartments and single-family and duplex homes ranging from new construction to over 75 years in age. This card set consists of photographs representing a very small chunk of the action that these very dedicated volunteer firefighters face in a typical year and paves the way for future sets depicting this amazing volunteer department and it’s achievements in firefighting which rival those of major cities such as New York City, Washington DC, Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, and San Francisco.
